Pillowcases for Fire Victims
Following the bad 2011 summer fires in Texas, the sewing community is invited to make at least one pillowcase for the fire victims in an effort to make a small difference to those with such devastating loss.

The Walla Walla Valley Quilt Guild has chosen to use their love of quilts to reach out to the community in several ways. Our regular projects include:

Baby Quilts

are baby quilts that we take to the Family Medical Center to give to special needs babies and mothers who are struggling to have what they need for their babies. Each member is encouraged to bring in an average of one baby quilt a month. At the end of the year for those who have participated with an average of 1 quilt per month are entered in a drawing for a year-end prize. We share and submit the baby quilts, as the are completed, at our Guild meetings.

Quilts for Family Health Services

are baby quilts and lap quilts. These go to Family Health Services for those who just need some extra comfort. This project came from a suggestion by Nancy Kessler. These quilts, too, are brought to share and submit at the monthly Guild meetings.

Women's Shelter Projects

We are making twin-bed-sized quilts for the Helpline Women's Shelter in Walla Walla. They can be any design, but must fit twin beds. We have nearly met our pledge of 30 quilts for the shelter, and will continue to provide quilts to the Shelter as they are needed.

We have also embarked on a tote-bag project for the Shelter. Simple tote bags containing personal care items are a consumable item given to the women at the Helpline Shelter. The Guild members have been challenged to meet the extensive, on-going need for these bags. The suggested size for the totes is 16" x 16" squares with 2 1/2" bottom cutouts for a box bottom bag. Members are also encouraged to donate contents for the bags.
A tote tutorial was distributed at the April Guild meeting. Patterns and tutorials for over 35 tote bags can be found on-line at Tipnut.com
The Baby and Women's Shelter quilts, and the totes, the creative efforts of individual Guild members, who complete the projects and bring them to the Guild to show and submit. They can be any pattern, any color, and/or theme.

Senior Round Table Placemats

We are making placemats in sets of 4 to be given to the senior center. These will be displayed and voted on, then auctioned as fundraisers for the Senior Center.

The next two categories of quilts are NOT backed and finished by the members individually. These blocks are prepared by the members and a sub-group from the Guild membership backs and finishes the quilts.

Habitat for Humanity

receives our HOUSE block quilts. The blocks are made by members as they can get them done. They must be 12.5 x 12.5 inches unfinished. They are submitted at Guild meetings. When we have enough blocks, a group of Guild members put the quilts together. We give them to Habitat for Humanity for families who receive a Habitat home in our area. The blocks can be of ANY house--your choice, made in any method of your choice (patched, appliqued, embroidered, etc). Members bring finished blocks to the monthly Guild meeting.

Hearts and Flowers

are quilts of love and friendship that are made from blocks submitted by members as they can make them. The blocks are 6.5 x 6.5 inches unfinished, and should be made with "happy colors". Blocks with heart patterns (any kind) and flower patterns (any kind) are combined with 9-patch blocks to make these lap quilts. Members can submit any of the three block choices. After the quilts are assmebled, they are signed by the members and given to members and others who are ill, grieving, or just having a particularly rough time. The blocks are accepted each month at the Guild meetings.

Project Linus

Though not a formal project of the Guild, this project is an outreach program held at Walla Walla Sew and Vac. For more information about meeting times, go HERE, or call the store for information..
